Map Tools

Overview of map tools

To interact with the map, here are some available tools and their descriptions. Throughout this tutorial, we wil use these tools to interact and navigate the map. Make sure you read this section before proceding to the next page. When you finish, click Next button on the upper right hand corner to learn how to use these tools.

Zoom into Map

Click the button to choose the tool, then click and drag diagonally across the map to draw a red rectangle around the area that you want to zoom.

Zoom out Map

Click this button to choose the tool, then click and drag diagonally across the map to draw a red rectangle whose size as a proportion of the visible map area indicates the factor by which you want to zoom out.

 

pan around

 

Pan Around

Click this button to choose the tool, then “grab” the map (click and drag) to shift it so that areas beyond the edges of the map pane will become visible. It will take a few moments to retrieve the necessary data from the map server.

 

identify feature

 

Identify feature

Click this button to choose the tool. Make sure the layer that contains the map feature(s) for which you want information is
active layer

Layers

Click the main map on a symbol, line, or polygon to see its data in a pop up window.

 

measure distance

Measure Distance

Click this button to choose the tool, then click the point in the map where you want to start measuring. Then click another point for which you need the distance from the first point or where you must change the direction of measurement.

To reset, click on the measure distance button again.

Wait until the map has been redrawn with a red dot at your starting point

Zoom the map out to its maximum extent

Go to Last Extent

 

Go to last extent

Zooms or pans back to the previous map view. If you click this button twice or multiple times, it toggles between the current and previous views.
